Challenge: Sub-5 micron glass dust was playing havoc on the ball race linear bearings used on a cathode ray tube (CRT) screen splitting recycling system. Dust was infiltrating the travel table bearings and transport assembly which caused a build-up of glass and, ultimately, premature failure. CRT Heaven, manufacturer of the CRT Angel machine, required a linear bearing assembly solution that would minimize downtime and maintenance and withstand significant forces imposed by CRTs weighing up to 60kg with glass up to 15mm thick.
Application Description: The CRT Angel is a highly efficient machine that accurately separates the unleaded glass portion from the leaded glass portion of television and monitor tubes. The machine has six pre-programmed cut cycles to handle the variety of CRT shapes and sizes. The CRT is mounted to a travel table and laterally transported between diamond cutting blades for the initial cut, then it’s rotated 90º and cut again, completing the separation of the two glass portions. The internal and external components of the CRT are then removed for proper disposal. The machine processes per hour an average of 120 IT monitors and 80 CRTs varying in sizes from 6” to 42”.
Solution: CRT Heaven chose the HepcoMotion GV3 linear system because of its similar profile to the flat rail and ball race bearings already installed on the machine, and its ability to handle the aggressive, dust-laden environment. The GV3’s all-steel slideway’s rugged construction makes it ideal for this heavy duty application. GV3 was also chosen for its unique wiping action which expels the fine glass dust, preventing it from compromising bearing performance. According to the project manager at CRT Heaven, after one and a half years in use, only one of the 48 journals had to be replaced, and only because a foreign object inadvertently left on the machine. Without a doubt, the longevity, performance, and ease of installling and servicing the bearing assemblies has helped increase the production and efficiency of the CRT Angel.
